CompactPCI® PlusIO (PICMG 2.30) complements the parallel CompactPCI® bus (PICMG 2.0) by additional serial interfaces and thus makes it possible to meet modern requirements regarding speed and volume of the data to be processed. Every kind of camera system can be quoted as an example here, but surveillance systems in all areas of public life are gaining more and more importance.
This camera application is a self-sustaining surveillance system, which is supplied by a battery or for example by solar power. The computer is used in open areas for area surveillance for safety institutions, hospitals, public buildings etc. It works with intelligent object recognition. For this, IP based cameras and optional sensors (acoustic, radar, infrared etc.) are connected. The images are processed locally and trigger an alarm, e.g., if a movement is detected. Via software decision, processes are carried out, the results can later be encoded and compressed and sent to the control center via a wireless connection.
The current CompactPCI® system is based on an SBC with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo and offers Gigabit Ethernet, SATA, audio in and out as well as interfaces for wireless transmission (WLAN, GPRS, UMTS, LTE). As in the future further functions like additional Ethernet lines, frame grabber or HDD/SDD memories shall be implemented, an extension to PICMG 2.30 is advisable, in order to be able to use PCI Express® and SATA on the backplane.
To guarantee out-of-doors functionality, the complete electronics is integrated in a conductive cooling housing. The system is specified according to MIL standards. The robust mechanics of CompactPCI® or CompactPCI® PlusIO is a prerequisite for this.
Another advantage of CompactPCI® PlusIO is the standardization within the PICMG. A well-developed ecosystem is the best guarantee for the availability of replacement components in "form, fit and function" for a system in use for 10 to 15 years even if some assemblies or system components have finished their life cycle.
