Whether CompactPCI® Serial or CompactPCI® PlusIO is better suited for a project or whether even the parallel CompactPCI® still meets the requirements, depends among other factors on the data transfer rate and bandwidth required by certain functions in the existing and in the future application. Obviously, the processor performance has to be suitable, too, and be based on current CPU platforms. For this reason, there already is a system slot board with a quad core i7 processor as well as a solution with Intel® Core™ 2 Duo (SP9300) for CompactPCI® PlusIO (PICMG 2.30). While the increasing speed and bandwidth requirements on the data highway lead to new system solutions like CompactPCI® Serial, many applications will still depend on traditional serial communication via UART and fieldbus interfaces for an extended period of time. At the moment, the appropriate COM ports are still included in the relevant CPU chipsets and are partly led out at the front panels of single-board computers for CompactPCI® Serial (or CompactPCI® PlusIO). Nonetheless, the number of the available UARTs might sometimes be insufficient and fieldbus interfaces are not part of the standard equipment of CPU manufacturers anyway. As was the case for CompactPCI®, the two board sizes 3U and 6U have been defined for CompactPCI® Serial. The 6U board size offers the user attractive options for combining the parallel CompactPCI® bus with the serial CompactPCI® bus with ease in a single system. In 3U systems there are also two possibilities for this, either using a double-width CPU inserted into a CompactPCI® system slot and with a mezzanine board inserted into the CompactPCI® Serial system slot, or alternatively, by selecting a CompactPCI® PlusIO system slot that can address both CompactPCI® and CompactPCI® Serial peripheral slots.
